JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Oct. 22, 2013) – The Maritime men's soccer team lost to non-conference opponent New Jersey City, 4-1, Tuesday night at the Caven Point Complex in Jersey. The Privateers fall to 5-9-2 overall on the season, while the Gothic Knights improve to 7-8-1.
Maritime got on the board first early in the game, when freshman
Renato Chira-Farfan (Miraflores, Peru/Mahopac (N.Y.)) (Miraflores, Peru/Mahopac (N.Y.)) fired a shot into the left side of the net from 15 yards out in the 9th minute to give the Privateers a 1-0 lead. NJCU responded shortly after, in the 14th minute, when junior Kelvin Flores buried a loose ball after a corner kick to tie the game at 1-1. Sophomore
Patrick Kelleher (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) played the first half in goal for Maritime and made three saves.
In the second half, the Gothic Knights took a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute, when junior Marco Avella scored on a shot from the far right sideline. New Jersey City added two more goals late in the game, the first by freshman Davauni Brown and second by sophomore Aboubacar Diawara. Brown and Diawara both assisted on each others' goals. Freshman
Phil Marks (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock) took over between the pipes at the beginning of the second half and made three saves.
Maritime returns to action on Thursday night, Oct. 24, when the Privateers welcome in Skyline opponent Mount St. Vincent. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
