Privateers Sail Past Vaughn, 69-60, For First Win Of The Season

        BRONX, N.Y. (Jan. 9, 2013) – The Maritime basketball team earned its first victory of the 2012-13 season on Wednesday night with a 69-60 win over non-conference Vaughn College at Hostos Community College. The Privateers led from beginning to end to give first-year head coach Jake Scott the first victory of his collegiate coaching career. The squad improves to 1-7 overall, while the Warriors' record falls to 4-7 on the season.
 
        Sophomore T-Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy) led the way for Maritime with 22 points, while senior Ron Bethea (Harlem, N.Y./Humanities Prep.) (Harlem, N.Y./Humanities Prep.) added 15. Sophomore Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall) recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while also chipping in with three assists.
 
        The Privateers used a five-minute stretch of the first half from 13:22 to 8:20 to build their lead to double-digits capped off by a fast-break layup by senior Thomas Davis (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury), who stole the ball and charged down-court for the basket to make the score 23-11 in favor of Maritime. The lead was extended to 16 by the halftime break after a jumper by sophomore Jeremiah Blunt (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./Bishop Ford ) (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./Bishop Ford) closed the scoring out at 36-20.
 
        In the second half, the Privateers took their largest lead of the game, 19 points, at 16:24 on a jumper by freshman Tim McNamara (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) (Somerville, N.J./Somerville). The Warriors fought back to six points late in the game, but clutch free-throw shooting in the last few minutes helped Maritime remain ahead.
 
        Vaughn was led by senior Jihad Ceaser, who had a game-high 24 points. Junior Jared Ndiba scored 16 points and sophomore Moises Chaucer added 11 to round out the double-digit performers. Senior Mahdi Macbahi brought down a team-high nine rebounds.
 
        The Privateers are back in action on Saturday, when they play host to Skyline-opponent Farmingdale St. Game-time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
