THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 16, 2013) – The Maritime basketball team hosted Skyline opponent Old Westbury Wednesday night at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium and lost to the Panthers by the score of 92-73. The Privateers fall to 1-10 (0-6 Skyline) on the season in defeat, while Old Westbury improves to 12-3 (7-0 Skyline).
“Every game we are getting closer to the team we need to be,” commented first-year head coach
Jake Scott. “We got some big performances tonight from various players, including some off of the bench. Once we are able to execute properly for 40 minutes, I believe we will be a tough team. I'm very proud of the fight in our team.”
The Panthers exploded out of the gate, building up a 10-point lead just six minutes into the game. The Privateers fought back to within four points, 23-19, at 11:54 on a three-pointer by
T-Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist Academy). Old Westbury relied heavily on their perimeter shooting in the first half, as they drained 7-of-10 from long distance, which helped lead to a 16-point, 54-38, lead at halftime.
Maritime started the second half on an 8-1 run, cutting the deficit to nine, 55-46, at 17:47 on two-straight free throws by senior
Ron Bethea (Harlem, N.Y./Humanities Prep.) (Harlem, N.Y./Humanities Prep.). However, the Panthers used the next nine minutes to build up a 21-point lead, 81-60, at 8:40, putting the game out of reach.
Bethea finished with a game-high 28 points, the highest total of his Maritime career. He also had eight rebounds. Sophomores
Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall) chipped in with 18 points, six steals, four assists and four rebounds and Gibson ended the day with 16 points and six boards. Sophomore
Jeremiah Blunt (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./Bishop Ford ) (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./Bishop Ford) led all players with 10 rebounds.
The Panthers had five players score in double-figures, led by Kerel Mitchell with 21 points. Tyrik Tucker had 19 points, Josh Hill scored 15, Darnell Chavis added 13 and Ty Moore chipped in with 11. Tucker had a team-high nine rebounds.
Maritime is back in action this Saturday, Jan. 19, when the team will up travel to Newburgh, N.Y. to take on Mount St. Mary. Game time is scheduled for noon at the Knights' Kaplan Center.
