ALBANY, N.Y. (Jan. 14, 2013) – The Maritime basketball team lost on the road Monday night to Skyline opponent Sage College, 81-59, at the Gators' Kahl Center. The Privateers fall to 1-9 (0-5 Skyline) on the season, while Sage improves to 7-6 (3-4 Skyline).
"As every game, our players played very hard,” said head coach
Jake Scott. “We went through a four-minute stretch in the beginning of the second half where we had a hard time scoring and they were able to capitalize. Those four minutes were the key to the game."
Senior
Ron Bethea (Harlem, N.Y./Humanities Prep.) (Harlem, N.Y./Humanities Prep.) led all players in the contest with 21 points and also brought down five rebounds. Sophomore-transfer
Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall) recorded his second double-double of the season for the Privateers with 16 points and a game-high 11 boards. He also dished out four assists.
The game was close with 6:45 to go in the first half, as the Gators only led by five, 24-19, but their lead would reach double-digits soon after on a three-point play by junior Mason Horne and two straight lay-ups by freshman Brandon Hornedo that brought the score to 31-19. The Privateers were forced to call a timeout. The Sage lead reached 15 points, 38-23, before halftime, but five-straight points by Bethea before the buzzer sounded ended the first with the Privateers trailing by 10, 38-28.
In the second half, Sage increased its lead to 30 points after a 21-1 run over the first five-plus minutes. Maritime got back to within 18 points twice late in the half, but were unable to overcome the deficit. Sage took advantage of the play down low throughout the night, outscoring the Privateers in the paint, 46-24.
Maritime will return home this Wednesday night, Jan. 16, for a slate against conference-foe Old Westbury. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
