PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (April 25, 2012) – The Maritime baseball team lost its Skyline Tournament contest, 8-3, Wednesday night at St. Joseph's College of Long Island's Gregg Alfano Field. The loss eliminated the Privateers from the postseason and ended their season with a 17-16 record, which is the program's most wins in the past 10 seasons and first winning season under head coach
Gene Steinbach.
Maritime fell behind in the bottom of the first inning when the Golden Eagles' leadoff batter Dennis Nover (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) started the inning with a triple and was brought home on an RBI groundout by the next batter, Anthony Delury (East Rockaway, N.Y.).
The Privateers would respond, however, with three runs in the top of the second inning, getting on the board with a costly error by the SJC third basemen on a ball hit by sophomore
Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) that scored senior
Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity). Junior
Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) would come home from third base after a wild pitch by St. Joe's starter, Robert Hyde (West Babylon, N.Y.) and then, two batters later, freshman
Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) drove in Galli with an RBI groundout to put Maritime ahead, 3-1.
The next inning did not fare well for the Privateers, as the Golden Eagles would score four runs (only two earned) after an error started the inning and St. Joe's cashed in with a couple of hits and hit batsmen with the bases loaded as well as a sacrifice fly to go up 5-3.
The home team would add runs in the bottom of the fourth, fifth and seventh to expand their lead to 8-3, while the Privateers kept stranding runners on base. Junior starting pitcher
Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) lasted into the seventh inning, giving up eight runs (six earned) on nine hits with just one strikeout. He was replaced by classmate
Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore), who pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit.
For the Golden Eagles, Delury finished the night with three RBIs despite not getting a hit. Hyde earned the victory with six innings pitched, allowing three runs (none earned) on five hits with six strikeouts. Jonathan Beekman (Longwood, N.Y.) earned the save by pitching three shutout innings of one-hit ball and two strikeouts.
