THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 20, 2012) – The Maritime baseball team was swept by Old Westbury in a Skyline Conference doubleheader Friday at Reinhart Field. The losses drop the Privateers to 16-15 (6-10 Skyline) on the season, while the Panthers improve to 26-9 (12-4 Skyline).

Maritime is now at the mercy of Mount St. Mary on Saturday, as the Privateers need the Knights to defeat Purchase in at least one game of their conference doubleheader to earn a berth in the Skyline Conference Tournament.

In between games of the doubleheader tonight, the Maritime baseball team paid tribute to its two seniors, Jonathan Prosica (Franklin Square, N.Y./ Holy Trinity) and Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) with a Senior Day Ceremony.

In the first game, Old Westbury built up a 10-2 lead after 2.5 innings, but the Privateers cut that deficit to just three in the bottom of the third with a leadoff solo home run by freshman Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and then, four batters later, a grand slam by junior Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac).

Maritime scored again in the fourth on solo blast by freshman Joseph Longo (Port Jeff. Station, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), but the Panthers showed their might at the plate by scoring three in the top of the fifth and putting the game well out of reach with eight in the top of the seventh. Junior Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) suffered the loss in the first game.

Game two saw Old Westbury jump on junior starter Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) early, scoring six runs in the second inning and then five more in the fourth. Maritime's only runs came on an RBI groundout by sophomore Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) in the fourth and a solo home run by Sollin in the seventh, his second of the day.

Maritime returns to action tomorrow morning, when they play host to non-conference opponent St. Joseph's of Brooklyn. First pitch of game one of the two-seven inning games is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Reinhart Field.
