THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 15, 2012) – The Maritime baseball team split its doubleheader with NYU-Poly on Saturday at Reinhart Field and then earned a sweep of Purchase on Sunday to finish the weekend with three wins in four conference games. The Privateers improve to 15-13 overall (4-9 Skyline).

On Saturday, sophomore Nick Sarna (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) earned the victory in game one after tossing seven innings and allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits with seven strikeouts. He was helped by freshman Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side), who was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Three other Privateers earned two RBIs, each, in the game. Freshman Robert Silvestri (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) earned the save after coming into the game and getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning. Poly sophomore Nathan Albers was on the long end for the loss.

The second game went to extra innings and the Blue Jays earned their first conference victory of the season with a grand slam in the top of the eighth by junior Anthony Finch. Sophomore Michael Staropoli (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) (New Rochelle, N.Y./Oswego State) suffered the loss. Freshman Thomas Bauer (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) provided most of the Privateer offense with three RBIs, all coming on two home runs. Christian Conroy earned the victory for NYU-Poly.

Sunday was a beautiful day for baseball and the Privateers were taking on the team that was right behind them in the standings of the Skyline Conference. The first game saw the Privateers take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after an RBI single by senior Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) and a two-RBI single by Bauer. The Blue Jays came back to score two in the third and then three more in the fifth to go ahead 5-4, but Maritime answered back in the sixth with four runs, many of them thanks in large part to sloppy fielding by Poly. After all was said and done, junior Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) earned his team-leading fifth victory of the season after pitching a complete game, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts. Chris Carboni lost his fourth game of the season.

Game two saw a stellar pitching performance by junior Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore), who threw a complete game shutout, while allowing just four hits for his fourth win of the season. The Privateers got RBIs by Staropoli, sophomore Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and freshman Joseph Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John Baptist). Panther junior Miller Lulow suffered the loss after six innings pitched.

Maritime needs any combination of one win or one loss by Purchase in conference games over the last week of action in the regular season to qualify for the Skyline Conference Tournament. The Privateers have two Skyline games left when they host Old Westbury in a doubleheader next Saturday, while the Panthers have three games left. They will take on NYU-Poly on the road in a single game on Friday and then host Mount St. Mary in a doubleheader on Saturday.

The Privateers are in action next when they host non-conference opponent City College on Tuesday night, April 17. Game time for the single, nine-inning game is schedule for 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
