THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 6, 2012) - The Maritime baseball team erased two deficits to win at home against the Baruch College Bearcats, 11-6, Tuesday night at Reinhart Field. The victory improves the Privateers to a perfect 4-0 on the season, while Baruch falls to 0-3. It was Maritime's first win over the Bearcats in three tries under Maritime head coach Gene Steinbach.

Junior Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y/ Stepinac) had a great night for the Privateers, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. He hit the first home run of the season for Maritime in the bottom of the fourth, a solo shot to right field that pulled the Privateers to within 4-2 of Baruch and then he provided the go-ahead, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to put Maritime ahead for go, 7-6. An inning after Martinez's home run, senior Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) knocked a two-run game-tying home run, also into right field. Proscia finished the night 2-for-4 with those two RBIs as well as three runs scored.

Senior Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) was quietly clutch with two sacrifice flies on the night. Junior pitcher Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) tossed six innings of four-hit ball while allowing six runs, but only one was earned, as again the Privateers struggled with errors. He also had seven strikeouts on the night. Myers gave way to junior-transfer Michael Staropoli (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) in the top of the seventh and Staropoli picked up his first win with his new club as Maritime took the lead in the bottom of the inning. He threw 2.1 shutout innings and allowed one hit, while striking out four.

The Privateers tacked on three more runs in the eighth to expand their lead to 11-6, as the game started to turn ugly in the field for Baruch, as it had been for Maritime earlier in the night. Sophomore-transfer Sal Castagnaro (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) came in to pitch 2/3 of an inning in the ninth and forced a game-ending double-play to shortstop Thomas Bauer (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) who stepped on second and tossed it over to Proscia to end the game. Freshman Joseph Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John Baptist) and sophomore Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) each had two runs apiece on the night.

For Baruch, sophomore Yancy Taveras (New York, N.Y.) had the big hit on the night, a two-run homer to right field that put his team back ahead, 5-4, in the top of the sixth.  His classmate Ricky Gerbino (Elmont, N.Y.) had a team-best two RBIs, both on a double to left center in the second inning. Starting pitcher Paul Perez (Middle Village, N.Y.) tossed 5.2 innings and gave up five runs on eight hits, giving way to sophomore Jason Berliner (Long Island City, N.Y.), who suffered the loss, giving up six runs (five earned) on five hits.

Maritime will take the field again next this Saturday, March 10, when the Privateers host non-conference opponent Plymouth St. back to Reinhart Field for a double-header of two, seven-inning games. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11 a.m.
