FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (March 25, 2012) – The Maritime baseball team was swept in a conference doubleheader on Sunday by the Skyline-undefeated Farmingdale State Rams. The home squad held off a Privateer rally in the top of the ninth to win the first game, 5-4, before winning game two by the score of 10-0.

Maritime's record moves to an even 9-9 on the season (2-4 Skyline), while Farmingdale St. improves to 12-6 (6-0 Skyline).

In game one, the Rams scored all of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Maritime started a late rally in the top of the ninth. The Privateers scored four runs on RBI singles by a quartet of freshmen: Patrick Kirk (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep), Thomas Bauer (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur), Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and Joseph Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John Baptist). Maritime loaded the bases with just one out, but Farmingdale ended the threat with the tying run on third base and the go-ahead run on second by inducing a fielder's choice and a strikeout.

Sophomore-transfer Sal Castagnaro (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) was on the hook for the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits in five innings. Classmate Michael Staropoli (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) (New Rochelle, N.Y./Oswego State) took over and allowed no hits through three innings, but walked five while striking out one. The Rams' senior Chris Phelan (Patchogue, N.Y.) earned the win with 8.1 innings pitched, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, striking out five. Freshman Michael Santagata (Brentwood, N.Y.) earned the save, his second of the season.

Farmingdale scored two runs in the first inning of the second game and starting pitcher C.J. Bula (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.) was lights out, pitching a complete game, two-hit shutout with three strikeouts to earn the victory. The Rams broke the game open in the bottom of the third with five runs and then tacked on three more in the sixth.

Sophomore Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits with one strikeout in 4.0 innings of work. He was replaced by junior Max Lockwood (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon), who finished the final two innings allowing three runs on four hits with one strikeout.

The Privateers return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Randall's Island to take on City College in a single, nine-inning game. First pitch against the Beavers is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Field #53.
