THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 24, 2012) – The Maritime baseball team earned its first-ever victory over Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's with a rebound win in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at Reinhart Field. The Privateers brushed off the 12-1 loss in the first game with a dramatic 4-3 victory in game two to move to 9-7 (2-2 Skyline), while St. Joseph's moves to 7-9 (3-1 Skyline).
The bottom of the sixth was the difference for Maritime in game two, when the Privateers put up three runs to break a 1-1 tie. Junior
Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) had the tie-breaking RBI with a single past the third-baseman up the left field line that scored freshman
Joseph Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John Baptist). Then freshman
Matthew Dillon (Floral Park, N.Y./Holy Cross) (Floral Park, N.Y./Holy Cross) hit a two-run home run to right field to make the score 4-1.
St. Joseph's nearly came back in the top of the seventh, when they scored two runs on a solo home run and a sacrifice fly, but the Privateers held on as junior pitcher
Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) finished his complete game by inducing a game-ending flyout to left field with the tying run just 90 feet from home. Myers earned his team-leading third win after allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with five strikeouts.
In game one, the Golden Eagles bats were strong, as they belted out 15 hits and built a 3-0 lead after just the first two innings. They expanded the lead to 7-0 in the top of the fourth and scored five more in the last two innings combined. The Privateers only run came on a solo homer by senior
Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) in the bottom of the seventh. It was the first dinger of his career, but it was not enough as the Privateers lost in seven due to the new conference 10-run rule. Junior starter
Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) got roughed up in his five innings of action, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits, while striking out just one and hitting five batters.
The Privateers return to action tomorrow, when they travel to Nassau County, Long Island to take on Skyline-foe Farmingdale State. First pitch of the opening game of the double header is scheduled for noon at the Rams' Baseball Field.
