THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 14, 2012) - The Maritime baseball team gave up four home runs, which contributed to 11 runs for the visiting Lehman Lightning, in a 14-5 loss Wednesday night against the local-Bronx foe at Reinhart Field. The defeat drops the Privateers record to 5-4 on the season, while the Lightning improve to 2-0.
The night started out well for the Privateers, as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning on a number of errors by Lehman and added another in the top of the fourth on an RBI-double by senior
Matthew Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall).
Sophomore
Sal Castagnaro (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's) was excellent on the mounf throughout the first five innings, striking out seven batters, before allowing a three run homer to Lightning junior Edwin Marrero in the sixth that cut the Privateer lead to 4-3. The floodgates opened in the seventh inning, when Lehman tacked on six more runs (all unearned), including four on a grand slam by junior Stephen Valdes that made the score 9-4.
Five more runs in the eighth – four of which came by home runs – gave the visitors a ten-run, 14-4, lead. Maritime responded with a run in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by junior
Joey Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) (Kirkland, Wash./Edmonds C.C.), but that was not enough, as the Lightning claimed the victory. Valdes closed out the game on the hill for Lehman with three innings of two-hit ball to earn the win.
The Privateers are back at it this weekend for their first set of games away from home. They will travel to Staten Island on Saturday for a doubleheader against the Dolphins starting at noon at the CSI Baseball Complex. They will then open up conference play with a double-header against Yeshiva at William Taft High School on the other side of the Bronx on Sunday, also beginning at noon.
