THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 7, 2012) – The Maritime men's basketball team fought hard after falling behind 13-0 early to come back to within four points midway through the first half, but was unable to come all the way back and lost to visiting St. Joseph's, 91-73, Tuesday night at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. The Privateers fall to 2-20 (2-14 Skyline) with the loss, while the Skyline's best team improves to 18-2 overall, including a perfect 14-0 record in conference play.
After being named to the Skyline Conference weekly honor roll for his efforts last week, senior
Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) shined once again for the Privateers with a game-high 20 points, marking the fifth straight 20-plus point performance for the guard and his eighth in the past 10 games. Junior
Bill Sherwood (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) had a career night, registering a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Freshmen
Louie Lewis (Bronx, N.Y./Eagle Academy) (Bronx, N.Y./Eagle Academy) and
T-Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sun Land Academy) each recorded 12 points apiece to round out Maritime's double-digit scorers.
It took some time for the Privateers to adjust to the full-court press of the Golden Eagles, which helped the visitors grab their large lead early. The Privateers shot just 30.3-percent (10-for-33) in the opening stanza, as opposed to the 50.0-percent (19-for-38) clip that St. Joseph's had. The Eagles took a 53-32 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, St. Joseph's got off to a hot start once again, building its lead up to 23 points on two separate occasions early. Maritime fought back to within just nine points, 68-59, with 11:53 to go in the game on a pair of free throws by McSloy. However, on the next possession, the Eagles extended their lead to double-digits once again and it would stay that way through the final horn.
Six players scored in double-figures for St. Joseph's, led by senior Chris Jimenez (Huntington Station, N.Y.), who registered 17 points. His classmate, Shahab Syed (Huntington, N.Y.), recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while seniors Olivier Laurent (Amityville, N.Y.) and Steve Valazquez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) each scored 14 points, apiece. Senior Trey Black (Bayport, N.Y.) and freshman Sean McCarthy (Kings Park, N.Y.) each had 10 points, apiece.
The Privateers return to action this Saturday, Feb. 11, when they play host to Skyline-opponent Mount St. Mary. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
