THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 18, 2012) – The Maritime men's basketball team lost its final game of the 2011-12 season, 85-57, to conference-opponent Old Westbury Saturday afternoon at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. With the defeat, the Privateers end the season with a 2-23 overall record, including a 2-16 mark in Skyline play. The Panthers improve to 13-12 (10-8 Skyline).
Before the game, the Maritime basketball program paid tribute to the six players that were playing their final games with the Privateers:
Michael Neimes (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep (Fla.)) (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep.),
Juan Gorostiaga (Tampa, FL/Armwood High (FL)) (Tampa, Fla./Armwood),
Henry Evans (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Stillwater) (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Stillwater),
Bill Sherwood (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy),
Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) and
Sam Porte (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science & Engineering) (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science & Engineering).
McSloy and Porte were Maritime's leading scorers, as the former had team-high 20 points for his eighth-straight 20-plus point scoring game and the latter had 17 points and nine rebounds to close out his four-year career. McSloy also added five assists. Sophomore
Jack Cole (Bethany Beach, Del./Indian River) (Bethany Beach, Del./Indian River) contributed 10 points in the losing effort.
For Old Westbury, senior Trevor McNair (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded 20 points and a game-high 23 rebounds, while junior Rashawn McCarthy (Westbury, N.Y.) led all players with 21 points. Two other players scored in double-figures for the Panthers, as junior Kerel Mitchell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) registered 16 points and senior Jamal Little (Spring Valley, N.Y.) put up 12 points.
