THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 29, 2012) – The Maritime men's basketball team rallied back to within four points late in the second half, but fell short of visiting NYU-Poly, 63-57, in the first Skyline game of the season Thursday night at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. The Privateers fall to 0-5 (0-1 Skyline) in defeat, while the Jays improve to 2-3 (1-0 Skyline).

Senior Ron Bethea (Harlem, N.Y./Humanities Prep.) (Harlem, N.Y./Humanities Prep.) led Maritime with 20 points on the night, including seven on free throws, alone. Sophomore Kevin Waxon (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) scored 13 points for his first career double-digit effort, while classmate T-Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist) brought down a team-high five rebounds. Freshman Tim McNamara (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) chipped in with eight points.

The lead changed six times within the first nine minutes of the game, but Poly switched to a full-court press and used a 25-7 run over eight minutes to take a commanding 14 points lead, 35-21, at 6:02 of the first half. The Privateers fought back to within eight points, 42-34, into the halftime break.

In the second half, the Jays got their lead back up to 14 points, but the Privateers kept chopping away and finally got to within four points, 61-57, with 2:00 to play, on a free throw by freshman Clayton Zoller (Syosset, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) (Syosset, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial). Poly was able to ward off the comeback, however, and hold on for the victory.

The Jays were led by freshman Jamel Gist, who tallied a game-high 21 points and nine boards. Sophomore Thomas Fabian added 11 points and classmate Jethro Auguste recorded nine points and six rebounds.

Maritime is back in action this Saturday, Dec. 1, when the squad will welcome in Skyline-foe Purchase for a 2 p.m. game at the Riesenberg Hall Gym.
