OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Jan. 28, 2012) - The Maritime men's basketball team lost on the road Saturday afternoon in a Skyline Conference contest at Old Westbury, 76-69. The defeat drops the Privateers to 2-17 (2-10) on the season, while the Panthers improve to 10-8 (7-4).

Once again, senior Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) led the way for Maritime with 24 points, while grad student Sam Porte (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science & Engineering) (Harlem, N.Y./Math, Sci. & Engin.) drained 16 points and brought down a team-high nine rebounds. Freshman Tyler Brown (New York, N.Y./Humanities Prep.) (New York, N.Y. / Humanities Prep.) chipped in with 10 points for the Privateers.

Maritime held an eight-point lead almost six minutes into the game, which was it's largest of the day, but Old Westbury charged right back to gain command of the first half and take a seven-point lead (34-27) into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the Panthers expanded their lead to double-digits, reaching an advantage as high as 18 points (63-45) with just 6:49 to go. The Privateers fought back hard down the stretch, however, cutting the deficit to just three points on a pair of free throws by McSloy with 43 seconds left. Old Westbury helf off the comeback, though, to capture the victory.

The Panthers were led by Kerel Mitchell, who scored a game-high 26 points. Tavon McNair recorded a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Rob Sanders brought down 10 boards on the afternoon.

Maritime returns to action on Wednesday night, Feb. 1, when the squad plays host to the other Panthers from the Skyline Conference, these from up in Purchase. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
