Privateers Fall To Mount St. Vincent, 87-80, Wednesday Night In See-Saw Affair

        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 26, 2012) – In a back-and-forth game Wednesday night, the Maritime men's basketball team lost on the road to local Skyline Conference foe Mount St. Vincent by the close score of 87-80 at the Dolphins' Peter Jay Sharp Center. With the loss, the Privateers fall to 2-16 on the season (2-9 Skyline), while CMSV improves to 6-11 (4-6 Skyline).
 
        Senior Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park), who earlier in the week was named to the Skyline Conference men's basketball weekly honor roll for his efforts in the Privateers' three games last week, led the way for Maritime with a game-high 26 points. It was McSloy's ninth 20-plus scoring effort of the season. Junior Hugh Byrd (Pequannock, N.J./DePaul Catholic) (Newfoundland, N.J./DePaul Catholic) registered a career-high 18 points, while classmate Bill Sherwood (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) rounded out the Privateers' double-digit scores with 11 points. In his first game back after missing two straight, grad student Sam Porte (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science & Engineering) (Harlem, N.Y./Math, Sci. & Engin.) recorded six points and a team-high nine rebounds.
 
        There were nine lead changes in the game and the Privateers were ahead by as much as eight points with 6:49 to go in the second half. A late surge by the Dolphins, which included a 22-5 run, allowed them to take control of the game with a nine-point lead, 79-70, with just 1:54 to play.
 
        Mount Saint Vincent was led by sophomore Chris Bonaventura (Staten Island, N.Y.), who scored 17 points and dished out a game-high five assists. Senior Cody Gauvard (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) also poured in 17 points for the Dolphins, while juniors Shaquille Cunningham (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Sean Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored 13 and 12, respectively. Senior Mark Waite (Chicago, Ill.) grabbed down a game-high 15 rebounds.
 
        The Privateers return to action this Saturday, Jan. 28, when they travel to Long Island to take on Old Westbury in Skyline Conference action. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Panthers' Clark Athletic Center.
