THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 21, 2012) – The visiting NYU-Poly Fighting Blue Jays battled a snow storm to come up to the Bronx from Brooklyn this afternoon and left the mainland with its first win of the season, defeating the Privateers, 70-50, at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. With the loss, Maritime falls to 2-15 (2-8 Skyline) on the season, while Poly improves to 1-14 (1-9 Skyline).
Two players scored in double-figures for the Privateers, led by senior
Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) with a game-high 18. Freshman
Tyler Brown (New York, N.Y./Humanities Prep.) (New York, N.Y./Humanities Prep.) added 12 points and both McSloy and Brown brought down four rebounds apiece. Freshman
T-Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Free Land Academy) contributed with seven points and a team-high six rebounds.
The Privateers shot just 22.4-percent in the game, as opposed to the 43.5-percent clip the Blue Jays recorded. Poly also won the battles down low, registering 36 points in the paint, while also out-rebounding Maritime by a 51-45 margin.
NYU-Poly senior Alex Westphal (Port Washington, Wisc.) registered a triple-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 11 blocked shots. Three other players added double-digit scoring performances: freshman Evan Azzam (Los Angeles, Calif.) recorded a team-high 15 points, classmate Jethro Auguste (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 13 and freshman Thomas Fabian (Stroudsburg, Pa.) rounded them out with 10 points.
Maritime is in action next on Wednesday, Jan. 25, when they travel across the Bronx to face local Skyline-foe Mount Saint Vincent. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Dolphins' Sharp Athletic Center.
