THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 5, 2011) – The Maritime men's soccer team began defense of its 2010 Skyline Conference championship tonight against Yeshiva at Reinhart Field and came away with a 5-2 victory. The win improves the Privateers to 2-1 overall on the season (1-0 Skyline), while the Maccabees begin the year 0-1 (0-1 Skyline).

Maritime had five different goal scorers on the night, as senior Jason Tursi (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) got on the board first after a pass by classmate David Kittinger (Fort Myers, Fla./South Fort Myers (Fla.)) (Fort Myers, Fla./South Fort Myers) misconnected in front but went right to a wide open Tursi who fired it home in the 8th minute. The Maccs answered right back, though, less than a minute later, when freshman Mikey Holder fired a shot in that was saved, but bounced right back to him and he found the empty net to tie the game at 1-1.

It took the Privateers nearly 10 minutes, but they would go back on top when senior Kevin Connolly (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) found the back of the net off a pass by freshman David Hraska Jr. (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford). Maritime scored again in the 38th minute, as freshman Oliver Garcia Ortiz (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) took a great through ball from senior Jack Blunden (Arlington, Va./Washington) (Arlington, Va./Washington) in for a breakaway and dribbled around the goalkeeper before firing in the empty net to make it 3-1.

Just two and a half minutes later, Blunden scored off a nice cross from Tursi from the far corner. However, before the half ended, Yeshiva would strike again, as freshman David Roumani scored off a pass by Holder to send the teams into the break with Maritime ahead, 4-2.

The second half was quiet early and saw the only goal come in the 76th minute, when freshman Raphael Tavares (Belleville, N.J./Belleville) (Belleville, N.J./Belleville) snuck a ball in the bottom left corner after a great pass by junior Ryan Nugent (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic).

In goal for the Privateers, sophomore John Dunne (Southold, N.Y./Southold) (Southold, N.Y./Southold) got the start and played 81:45, allowing two goals while making three saves and picking up his first collegiate win. He was replaced by freshman Patrick Kelleher (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) with just over eight minutes to go, who saw no shots threaten the net.

Yeshiva's freshman keeper Adrian Gucovschi made 10 saves in the losing effort.

Maritime returns to action tomorrow, when they play host to non-conference opponent, Keystone College, at 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field. The game is part of a double-header, with the women playing Keystone beforehand at 5 p.m.
