WESTBURY, N.Y. (Sept. 24, 2011) – The Maritime men's soccer team won on the road at Skyline-foe Old Westbury in shutout fashion Saturday afternoon, 2-0, at Panther Park. The victory improves the Privateers' record to 6-2-2 (2-0 Skyline), while Old Westbury falls to 1-7 (1-1 Skyline).
Freshman Raphael Tavares (Belleville, N.J./Belleville) (Belleville, N.J./Belleville) opened the scoring in the 25th minute off an assist by senior Jason Tursi (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge). Despite being outshot by the Panthers, 14-6, in the opening half, the Privateers went into halftime with a 1-0 lead. Sophomore goalkeeper John Dunne (Southold, N.Y./Southold) (Southold, N.Y./Southold) made six saves in the first 45.
Dunne was replaced by junior Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, N.Y./Commack) for the second half, who saw his first action since the Sept. 3 game against Lehman. He made one save in his return. In the 89th minute, the Privateers scored a late insurance goal when freshman David Hraska Jr. (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) found the back of the net off a pass by senior Jack Blunden (Arlington, Va./Washington) (Arlington, Va./Washington).
The victory went to Dunne, his fifth of the season. For the Panthers, junior Pablo Diaz suffered the loss despite making three saves.
Maritime returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 28, when the squad travels up to Newburgh, N.Y. to take on Skyline-opponent Mount Saint Mary. Game time against the Blue Knights is scheduled for 7 p.m.
