THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sep. 1, 2011) – The SUNY Maritime men's soccer team dropped its season-opener to arch-rival Kings Point, 1-0, Thursday night at Reinhart Field. With the loss, the Privateers fall to 0-1 on the season, while the Mariners start off 1-0.

Kings Point scored the only goal of the game in the first half, off of a free kick at exactly the 20 minute mark. Hollis Irvine took the kick for USMMA from about 25 yards out and placed it perfectly over the head of Maritime keeper junior Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, N.Y./Commack). KP would go on to dominate most of the first half, outshooting the Privateers, 11-1.

In the second half, Maritime turned on the pressure a bit, as they found opportunities, but could not find the back of the net. The Privateers possessed the ball better in the half, but were still outshot, 8-5. Senior Jack Blunden (Arlington, Va./Washington) (Arlington, Va./Washington) and junior Ryan Nugent (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) each had two shots in the game.

Vanadia was agile between the pipes, as he finished with eight saves. Five saves came in the first half, some off of nice dives. Kings Point goalie Garrett Reinert made two saves for the victory.

The Privateers return to action this Saturday, Sept. 3, when they play host to Lehman College of the CUNYAC Conference. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
