THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sep. 1, 2011) – The SUNY Maritime men's soccer team will open the 2011 season at home Thursday night against the preseason No. 8 team in the country, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Reinhart Field.

The Privateers are coming off a magical 2010 campaign that saw the team win its first ever Skyline Conference Championship and become the first team in school history to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. The Mariners had a very successful season last year as well, reaching the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament before losing to eventual National Champion Messiah.

Inside The Series

In the last seven years, the two schools have met six times on the pitch, with Kings Point coming out on top in every contest. Last season, the Mariners won a close game, 2-1, in Great Neck. Then-junior Jason Tursi (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) scored a late goal for the Privateers and graduated-goalkeeper Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) was strong in net with 11 saves, but it was not enough, as the Mariners held on for the victory.
