THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 9, 2011) – The Maritime baseball team lost a pair of games to visiting conference-foe Mount Saint Mary College on Saturday at Reinhart Field. The losses drop the Privateers' record to an even 11-11 on the season (3-7 Skyline), while the Blue Knights improve to the same 11-11 overall record, but 7-3 in conference action.
In game one, the Mount were the first to get on the board in the third inning after Maritime committed two straight errors that allowed two runs to score. The Knights added eight more runs in the next two innings to improve their lead o 10-0. Maritime scored in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI fielder's choice by junior Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) and an RBI single by sophomore Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) that scored senior Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) and sophomore Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex), respectively.
Mount Saint Mary would score five more runs and the Privateers would get two in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout by freshman Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) that scored sophomore Joey Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) and Martinez came around on an error by the Knights' first baseman. They scored again in the ninth on a home run by senior Matthew Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep).
Sophomore Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) suffered the loss in the first game after pitching five innings and allowing 10 runs (only five earned) on nine hits and striking out four. Mount Saint Mary's freshman Dean White pitched five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and struck out two to earn his third victory of the season.
In game two, Maritime scored first in the bottom of the fifth, when Montanes stole third base after a double and scored on a bad throw by the Mount catcher. The Privateers were one out away from victory when, in the top of the seventh, the Blue Knights tied the game on a single by senior Louis Peisel. The game would go to extra innings.
In the bottom of the eight, Maritime led off with two straight singles to left field by Proscia and Semler. Galli would put down a sacrifice bunt to move them over. Mount Saint Mary internationally walked junior Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) to load the bases with one out. The next batter, Simpson, flied out to left field and Proscia tagged up from third to score the winning run but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Mount Saint Mary got the go-ahead run via a home run in the top of the ninth and then opened the floodgates, scoring eight runs in the inning to take a 9-1 lead.
Freshman Daniel Smith (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) suffered the loss and fell to 0-2 after pitching 2.2 innings and allowing eight runs (just two earned) on nine hits and striking out two. Classmate Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) started the game and went 6.1 innings and allowed only one run, the tying run, on just two hits, while striking out three. Sophomore Marc Soevyn picked up the win coming in in relief in the bottom of the eighth and getting the fly-out/double play at the plate. He allowed no runs on one hit in 1.2 innings pitched.
The Maritime baseball team will travel to Long Island, N.Y., on Sunday to face its Skyline Conference-rival Panthers from SUNY College at Old Westbury. The doubleheader is set to start at noon at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. Old Westbury will be holding its first Prostate Cancer Awareness Day.
