THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 6, 2011) – The Maritime baseball team dropped a non-conference contest to John Jay of the CUNYAC, 6-3, Wednesday afternoon at Reinhart Filed. With the loss, the Privateers fall to 11-9 overall, while the Bloodhounds improve to 6-16.
Maritime fell behind early in the first inning, allowing a run on two hits. The Privateers tied it up in the fourth when senior Matthew Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) stole home with the bases loaded. John Jay again took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly.
The Bloodhounds tacked on two more runs in each of the next two innings to extend their lead to 6-1. In the top of the ninth inning, the Privateers loaded the bases with one out. A two-RBI single by sophomore Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) made it 6-3 and the tying run came to the plate in Montanes. He walked to load the bases, but John Jay's Wilmer Chavez struck out the next batter and induced a game-ending flyout to center to preserve the victory.
Freshman Nick Sarna (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) started for the Privateers and pitched five innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and striking out two. He suffered the loss and falls to 2-3 on the season. He gave way to sophomore Red Burke (Warwick, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)), who tossed two innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out one. Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) came in for one inning of relief and struck out one without allowing a hit.
John Jay was led by Chavez, who was 3-for-5 at the plate with a run scored and freshman Ryan Corrigan, who was 3-for-3 with two doubles. Only three players had RBIs for the Bloodhounds, as three runs scored due to two separate errors and a wild pitch. Freshman Mark Marte earned the victory, the first of his career, after pitching four innings of solid relief, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
The Maritime baseball team returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Skyline-opponent Mount Saint Mary for a doubleheader. First pitch of the nine-/seven-inning doubleheader is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Reinhart Field.
