THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 3, 2011) – The Maritime baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader against the visiting College of Staten Island Dolphins Saturday at Reinhart Field. The Privateers' record moves to 11-8 overall, while the Dolphins progress to 11-9.
Freshman Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning of game two with what wound up being a game-winning sacrifice fly that scored junior Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity). Maritime would tack on three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth after an RBI-double by sophomore Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) and a two-RBI single by classmate Joey Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington).
Earlier in the game, the Privateers got out of an early 2-0 hole by scoring a run in each of the first three innings. Sophomore Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) pitched the complete game to get the win in the second game and improve to 1-1. He allowed three runs on five hits and fanned two batters. CSI's starter, senior Jeff Pontebbi, lasted four innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and striking out three in the losing effort.
In game one, the Dolphins' senior James Mardikos was stellar, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out six. Maritime starter, sophomore Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) suffered the loss after pitching 3.0 innings and allowing eight runs (six earned) on eight hits. He was relieved by freshman Daniel Smith (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) who pitched the last four scoreless innings and allowed one hit while striking out one.
Semler went 4-for-7 on the day and had a team-best four RBIs, including one on Maritime's only hit of the first game, a double that scored Martinez.
The Privateers return to action on Wednesday, April 6, when they travel to face non-conference opponent John Jay. Game time is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. at the American Legion Fields in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn.
