THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 26, 2011) – The Maritime baseball team lost today to archrival Kings Point, 10-2, in the 2011 season-finale at Reinhart Field. In defeat, the Privateers end the year with a 14-17 overall record while the Mariners improve to 12-13-1.
Prior to the game, the team honored its two graduate seniors, Matthew Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) and Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) for their contributions and dedication to the baseball program here at Maritime.
Maritime opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when sophomore Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) belted a solo home run to right center. USMMA answered back in the very next inning with a solo home run of its own by Dustin Thomsen to tie it up. The Mariners broke the game open in the top of the fourth as they tallied five runs on six hits, to take a 6-1 lead.
Kings Point tacked 2 more runs in both the 5th and 7th innings to go up 10-1. Maritime closed the scoring in the bottom of the 9th on an RBI single to left field by Simpson that plated junior Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity).
Sophomore Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) (Middlesex, N.Y./Middlesex) suffered the loss, after pitching 5.0 innings, allowing eight runs on twelve hits, while striking out three. For USMMA, Timothy Arner earned the victory after pitching 5.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits, while fanning one batter. Thomsen came in for four innings of relief and earned the save.
