THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 15, 2011) – The Maritime baseball team split a  home, conference doubleheader today against Mount Saint Vincent at Reinhart Field, winning the first game 6-4, before falling in the second, 13-4. The Privateers' record moves to 14-13 (5-9 Skyline), while the Dolphins become 14-18 (9-5 Skyline).

In game one, Maritime fell behind 2-0 early, as the Dolphins got a run in each of the first two innings. The Privateers broke through with four in the bottom of the third inning, the first run coming by way of a Dolphin throwing error that scored senior Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity), then sophomore Joey Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) knocked in three runs with a two-out double down the left field line to give Maritime a 4-2 lead.

Maritime added two more in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-double by junior Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) that scored sophomore Ed Martinez and a single by freshman that scored Proscia.

Mount Saint Vincent did not go down quietly, however, as they scored a run in the top of the sixth on a wild pitch and then had a great chance to do damage in both the top of the eighth and the top of the ninth. The eighth started with a single, double and walk that loaded the bases. With no outs, a sacrifice fly brought a run home to make it 6-4, but the runner on second tried to advance to third after the ball traveled into the infield and was thrown out by Semler, who barehanded the loose ball and threw it to third for the out. After a wild pitch and a walk, the Privateers called on Simpson to come in in a save situation and he struck out the last batter to end the top of the eighth. In the ninth, the Dolphins loaded the bases again, this time with two outs, but Simpson preserved the victory by inducing a game-ending fly out to right.

Freshman Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) earned the victory, his team-leading fourth, to improve his record to 4-1. The rookie pitched 7.2 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits and struck out two. Simpson got his second save of the season, pitching 1.1 inning and striking out two, while allowing only one hit. Junior Anthony Mongelli suffered the loss after pitching 6.0 innings and allowing six runs (two earned) on seven hits and striking out three.

In game two, Maritime would score first in the bottom of the first on an RBI-single by Martinez that scored senior Matthew Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep). Mount Saint Vincent tied it in the next half-inning on a solo home run by senior Fernando Suriel. Suriel did even more damage in the top of the third, smashing a grand slam home run over the centerfield wall to make the score 5-1. The Privateers got one back in the bottom of that inning, when Montanes went yard over the right field wall to make it 5-2.

Over the next two innings, the Dolphins tacked on seven more runs to open their lead up to 12-2, and Maritime would go through three more pitchers. Montanes hit would score again in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Semler. Each team scored one more run apiece in the seventh inning, both on home runs. Mount Saint Vincent's was by senior James Labertino and the Privateers' by Montanes, his second of the game and his fourth run score, as he accounted for all of Maritime's runs in the second game.

Sophomore Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) suffered the loss after pitching 3.2 innings and giving up eight runs (six earned) on just four hits and striking out four. Classmate Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) came in for one inning and allowed two runs on one hit, striking out one. Sophomore Red Burke (Warwick, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)) allowed two runs on two hits before giving way to freshman Kyle Gardner (Amityville N.Y./St. Anthony’s), who only allowed one run on one hit in 2.1 innings pitched, while also striking out one.

Junior Matt Calandrillo pitched a complete game for Mount Saint Vincent and earned the victory to improve to 2-3 on the season. He allowed four runs on six hits and struck out eight batters.

Maritime will have the weekend off now and returns to action with its conference-finale doubleheader against Farmingdale St. on Tuesday, April 19. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
