THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 8, 2011) – The Maritime baseball team was three outs away from a victory in its season-opening game against Baruch College Tuesday night at Reinhart Field, but the visiting Bearcats rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth to steal a 6-4 win. In defeat, the Privateers open the season with a 0-1 record, while Baruch improves to 2-0.

Senior first baseman Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) produced Maritime's only RBI of the night when he drove in sophomore Christopher Santoro (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) on a sacrifice fly to break a 3-3 tie and give the Privateers the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Maritime only had four hits on the night and took advantage of five Bearcat errors.

Freshman pitcher Nicholas Sarna was strong in his first inning, taking over in the eighth and striking out two en route to a quick 1-2-3 inning. However, the Bearcats got to him in the ninth, as Anthony Melendez smashed his second home run of the night to lead off the inning and tie the game at 4-4. Baruch tacked on two more runs for the victory, as Sarna got the loss. Jesus Izarra earned the win for the Bearcats.

Sophomore Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) started for the Privateers and threw four shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out two along the way. Classmate Red Burke (Warwick, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)) took over in the fifth and, despite striking out two, allowed Melendez's first home run, a two-run shot down the right field line, which gave Baruch a 2-1 lead at the time.

Maritime responded with two of its own in the bottom half of the fifth, the first on a double-steal that saw sophomore Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) take home after a throw down to second to attempt to catch senior Matthew Montanez stealing. Later in the inning, Montanes scored after an infield fly fell to the ground with the bases load and he raced in for the score to put the Privateers up 3-2. An RBI double by Baruch's Richard Melendez tied the score in the top of the sixth.

The Privateers return to action on Saturday, March 12, when the squad plays host to Plymouth State in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Reinhart Field.
