THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 30, 2011) – The Maritime baseball team swept its first home conference doubleheader of the season against Yeshiva Wednesday night at Reinhart Field by the scores of 12-1 and 8-1. The wins improve the Privateers to 10-7 overall (3-5 Skyline), while the Maccabees falls to 3-10 (0-4 Skyline).

Maritime had a combined 30 hits on the day, including a season-high 19 in the first game.

Freshman Nick Sarna (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) got the starting nod in game one and pitched eight innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out five for the win that improved his record to an even 2-2. He gave way to classmate Daniel Smith (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River), who pitched one inning of relief and struck out one.

Sophomore Joey Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) was 2-for-5 with a game-high four RBIs in the first game. Classmate Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) was a perfect 5-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Game two saw freshman Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) start for the Privateers. He pitched six innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six. Niemeyer's win was the team-leading third of the season as he improved to 3-1. He was replaced by sophomore Max Lockwood (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon), who pitched one inning and allowed one run on one hit.

Sophomore Christopher Santoro (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) smashed the Privateers' first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right center, in the third inning to make the score 8-0. Senior Matthew Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) also had two RBIs in the second game, as junior Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) and freshman Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) both scored two runs apiece.

On the day, Yeshiva was led by junior Elie Baratz and senior Jamie Engelhardt, who each knocked in the only runs of the day for the Macs. Game one's starter, senior Zachary Weiner, pitched six innings, allowing seven runs (only three earned) on 16 hits in the losing effort. In game two, sophomore Gabriel Feld got the nod to start, but only lasted two innings, giving up eight runs (six earned) on seven hits.

Maritime returns to the field on Saturday, when the squad welcomes in conference-opponent Farmingdale State for another Skyline doubleheader. Game time for the first of two is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Reinhart Field.
