THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 29, 2011) – Sophomore Red Burke (Warwick, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.))pitched a complete game shutout striking out nine to lead the Maritime baseball team to a 7-0 victory over local-rival Lehman College Tuesday afternoon at Reinhart Field. With the win, the Privateers improve to 8-7 overall, while the Lightning fall to 4-9.
Only four players had RBIs for Maritime, led by sophomore Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) who was 2-for-4 with an RBI-single in the fourth inning. Freshman Randy Heidanus (Bronx, N.Y./Herbert H. Lehman) also had an RBI single in the eighth inning to end the scoring. Senior Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) and freshman Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) both picked up RBIs in the second inning by way of a walk and a hit by pitch, respectively, with the bases loaded.
Junior Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) had three stolen bases on the night and led the Privateers with two runs scored. Burke improved to 2-1 on the season with the victory. Sophomore Jeremy Perez was the only Lehman player to have more than one hit, as he had two on the night.
The Privateers return to action tomorrow, Wednesday, March 30, when they play host to Skyline-foe Yeshiva. First game of the nine-inning/seven-inning doubleheader is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
