BROOKLYN, N.Y. (March 27, 2011) – The Maritime baseball team lost a pair of games to Skyline-opponent NYU-Poly Sunday afternoon at the Aviator Sports Complex at Floyd Bennett Field. The sweep drops the Privateers' record to an even 7-7 on the season (1-5 Skyline), while the Fighting Blue Jays improve to 2-10 (2-4 Skyline).
Junior Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) led the way for Maritime with a team-high four RBIs and four runs on the day, while stealing four bases in four attempts. Sophomore Joey Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) had five hits over the two games, knocking in three runs, while junior Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) recorded three RBIs and two runs.
On the mound, sophomore Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) started the first game and pitched six innings, allowing just two hits and an unearned run while striking out five. After he departed, the Blue Jays scored 12 runs over two innings to tie the game, before winning it in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the ninth.
In game two, sophomore Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) got the nod and pitched the full game, six innings, allowing 10 runs (just five earned) and striking out five. Maritime committed four errors that led to five unearned runs, eventually costing Myers his first loss of the season.
NYU-Poly was led by freshman Julian Santulli, who was 5-for-7 on the day with three RBIs and three runs. Sophomore Anthony Finch earned the win in both games for the Blue Jays, pitching just 4.0 innings of relief over the two games.
Up next, Maritime will play host to Lehman College on Tuesday, March 29, in a rescheduled game from last week's rainout. First pitch of the nine-inning single game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
