THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 26, 2011) – The Maritime baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader playing as the visiting team against the City College of New York Saturday at Reinhart Field. With the pair of wins, the Privateers improve to 7-5 overall, while the Beavers fall to 2-17.

Freshman Nick Sarna (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) took the mound in game one and earned his first victory of the season after pitching the complete game seven innings, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out two. The Privateers got RBIs from their 6, 7 and 8 batters as Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall), Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) and Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) all knocked in runs.

In the second game, Niemeyer got the starting nod and pitched six innings, allowing no runs on six hits and striking out two for his second win of the season. The Privateers scored what would turn out to be the game-winning run in the second inning when an RBI-groundout by Simpson scored sophomore Joey Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) from third base after he double to start the inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jernegan.

The game came down to the very end, as Niemeyer ran into a jam in the bottom of the seventh inning. CCNY loaded the bases with no outs. With the tying run at third base and the winning run at second, Maritime called in Simpson to pitch.

Simpson forced the first batter to fly out to center field and the runner at third base tagged up but was thrown out at the plate after a great throw from senior Matthew Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) was cut off by Niemeyer, who relayed it to Semler, who did a fantastic job blocking the plate and making the tag for a double play. The next batter grounded to second basemen Randy Heidanus (Bronx, N.Y./Herbert H. Lehman), who went to second base to get the force-out and end the game. Simpson earned the save.

Up next, the Privateers will travel to Brooklyn to take on Skyline-foe NYU-Poly on Sunday. Game one of the double-header is set to begin at noon at the Aviator Sports Complex off the Flatbush Ave. South (11S) exit of the Belt Parkway.
