PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (March 21, 2011) – The SUNY Maritime baseball team was swept in a conference doubleheader by St. Joseph's of Long Island Sunday at the Golden Eagles' Gregg Alfano Field. With the pair of losses, the Privateers' record drops to an even 5-5 (1-3 Skyline) on the season, while St. Joseph's improves to 6-8 (4-0 Skyline).
St. Joseph's scored early in the opening game, crossing the plate three times in the bottom of the first and then working up its lead to 11-0 after four innings of play. Maritime got on the board with two runs in the top of the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles by junior Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) and sophomore Joey Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington). After the Eagles scored two of their own in the bottom of the fifth, the Privateers would score again in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by freshman Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) and then again in the top of the ninth, when Proscia knocked in his second run of the day on a single.
Sophomore Red Burke (Warwick, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)) suffered the loss, his first of the year, after allowing 11 earned on 13 hits in five innings. Burke was replaced by freshman Kyle Gardner (Amityville N.Y./St. Anthony’s), who pitched three innings and allowed one run on five hits. Junior John Liberatore earned the win for St. Joseph's, pitching eight innings and allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out eight.
In game two, the Golden Eagles hit the Privateers hard in the fourth inning, scoring six runs. Maritime responded with runs in consecutive innings, the first in the sixth after sophomore Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) led off the inning with a triple and scored on an RBI groundout by the next batter, Proscia. The second run came in the top of the seventh, when Proscia picked up his fourth RBI of the day when he reached on an error by the shortstop that scored senior Matthew Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep).
Niemeyer got the loss in the second game, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing six runs on seven hits. He was replaced by freshman Daniel Smith (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River), who pitched 1.1 innings and allowed one hit before giving the ball to classmate Nick Sarna (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's), who allowed one run on three hits. Senior Joe Benkert earned the victory for St. Joseph's.
Maritime returns to the field on Wednesday, March 23, when the Privateers travel to play the make-up game against arch-rival Kings Point. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Mariners' Roosevelt Field on the campus of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
