THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 19, 2011) – Sophomore Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) pitched a one-hit shutout in the second game of the Maritime baseball team's Skyline-opening doubleheader on the road today at Purchase to earn a split on the day with a 4-0 victory. The Panthers took the first game by the score of 8-0.
The Privateers improve to 5-3 on the season (1-1 Skyline), while Purchase moves to 6-2 (1-1 Skyline).
Maritime was held to just two hits in the first game, as the Panthers scored early with three runs in the first inning to take the lead. They would add to their lead with two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings and one in the seventh to preserve the victory.
Senior Albert Baez earned the victory for Purchase, pitching eight innings and allowing just two hits and striking out 11 batters. For Maritime, sophomore Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) suffered his first loss of the season.
In game two, Maritime got on the board first in the top of the third inning, when freshman Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) drove home classmate Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) with an RBI-single.
The Privateers broke out for three runs in the next inning, as junior Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) scored when sophomore Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) reached first on an error by the Panthers' shortstop. In the next at bat, senior Matthew Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) hit a two-RBI double that scored Martinez and sophomore Joey Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington).
Myers was stellar, pitching the complete-game, one-hit shutout while striking out three in the process, earning his team-leading second win of the season. Junior Eric Cuadrado took the loss for Purchase.
Up next, the Maritime baseball will travel to Patchogue, N.Y., to face its second Skyline opponent in as many days when they square off against the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's College-L.I. The first game of the nine-inning/seven-inning doubleheader is set to start at noon.
The Privateers will look to take revenge on the Golden Eagles' doubleheader sweep when the teams met last time on March 28, 2010. The teams faced off at Reinhart Field where St. Joseph's defeated Maritime 12-4 in the first game and 16-3 in the second. The Privateers are also looking for their first victory against the Eagles in the last six years.
