FLEMINGTON, N.J. (March 15, 2011) - The Maritime baseball team lost to SUNY Cobleskill in a neutral-site contest, 6-2, Tuesday night at Diamond Nation. The Privateers' record falls to 4-2 on the season, while the Fighting Tigers improve to 1-4.
Cobleskill got on the board first, scoring five runs on six hits in the bottom of the second inning. Five of the hits were consecutive to start off the inning. Maritime responded by getting on the board in the top of the fourth. Senior Matthew Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) led off with a double down the right field line. He advanced to third on a groundout to short by sophomore Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) and scored on an RBI-groundout to second by sophomore Joey Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington).
The Tigers added a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI-single by sophomore Al Duell that scored junior Tim Pyszczynski to take a 6-1 lead. The Privateers threatened in the top of the eighth, loading the bases with one out. However, they were only able to score one run on a sacrifice fly by Montanes that brought junior Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) home to make it a 6-2 game.
Freshman Nicholas Sarna got the start for Maritime and threw seven innings, allowing six runs on nine hits and striking out four in the losing effort. He was replaced by sophomore Max Lockwood (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon), who pitched one scoreless inning.
Cobleskill starter, freshman Jason Proct, pitched nine innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out five.
Maritime returns to action tomorrow, Wednesday, March 16, when the squad travels across the Long Island Sound to face arch-rival U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. Game time for the single nine-inning game is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Mariners' Roosevelt Field.
