THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 13, 2011) – The Maritime baseball team swept its second double-header in as many days on Sunday when the Privateers defeated St. Joseph's of Brooklyn, 6-1 and 1-0, at Reinhart Field. The wins improve Maritime's record to 4-1 on the season, while the Bears fall to 0-6.
Freshman Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior) started the first game for the Privateers and pitched a gem, tossing six innings of one-hit ball, while striking out 10 batters in the winning effort. Junior Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) was 2-for-2 at the plate and scored two runs, while sophomore Christopher Santoro (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) was 1-for-1 with a 2-RBI double in the fourth inning.
The Privateers scored four in the bottom of the third when senior Matthew Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) drove home Jernegan, sophomore Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) plated senior Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) and Proscia brought home Montanes, all on RBI-singles. Proscia would go on to score after a double steal that saw freshman Joey Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) (Kirkland, Wash./Edmonds C.C.) take second base and Proscia swiping home on the throw to second.
St. Joseph's only run of the game came in the top of the seventh when junior Joseph Boccia drove in junior Jon Mendez on an RBI-single off of Proscia, who made his first appearance at pitcher for the Privateers in his second season with the program.
Simpson took the mound in the second game and threw five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out one. Maritime's only run of the game came in the bottom of the first inning when Proscia walked with two outs, stole second and third base and came home on a wild pitch.
Freshman Kyle Gardner (Amityville N.Y./St. Anthony’s) (Melville, N.Y./St. Anthony's) came in to replace Simpson in the sixth inning. He got two quick outs, then allowed a double, intentionally walked a batter and saw the two runners advance to second and third on a wild pitch before inducing an inning-ending pop out to second base that saw sophomore Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) fight the wind to make the tough catch and end the threat. Freshman Nick Sarna (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) earned the save by pitching a 1-2-3 seventh inning and the Privateers preserved the 1-0 lead.
Up next for Maritime will be a trip to a neutral site game in Flemington, N.J., against SUNY Cobleskill on Tuesday, March 15. One 7-inning game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Diamond Nation.
