THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 12, 2011) – The Maritime baseball team took both games of a home doubleheader against visiting Plymouth State Saturday at Reinhart Field. The first game was a long one, going well past the scheduled seven innings, ending in the 12th with the Privateers winning, 1-0. Maritime wasted no time scoring in the second game and went on to win, 4-1.

The wins improve the Privateers' record to 2-1 overall on the season, while the Panthers begin the year with an 0-2 mark.

Maritime saw sophomore Trevor Cannella (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore) make his second straight start and it was a great one. He allowed only four hits over seven innings tossed, while striking out five. Plymouth's starter Jonathan Bishop was equally as dominant, allowing just two hits and fanning eight in eight innings, including a perfect first 5.1 innings.

Sophomore Red Burke (Warwick, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)) was solid in relief of Canella, pitching five shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four. The Privateers had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the 11th inning when they loaded the bases with one out, but two straight groundouts ended that threat.

Maritime finally broke through in the bottom of the 12th inning off of reliever Bobby Chatfield when sophomore-transfer Joey Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) plated junior Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) on a game-winning RBI single to center field. Despite pitching 3.2 innings of two-hit, four-strikeout ball, Chatfield suffered the loss, while Burke earned the victory for Maritime.

In the second game, Semler led the way, going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored. Procisa also had two RBIs, both on a single in the fourth inning that plated the go-ahead runs giving the Privateers a 3-1 lead. Semler plated senior Matthew Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) on a RBI groundout in the first inning after Montanes reached on an error, stole second base, and moved to third after a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac). Semler also brought Martinez home with a single to right in the bottom of the sixth after Martinez reached on a single to right of his own and advanced to second on a wild pitch.

Sophomore Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) earned the victory after pitching seven innings of one-run ball, allowing just four hits and striking out three.

Maritime returns to action tomorrow morning, when the Privateers play host to St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn in a non-conference double-header of two, seven-inning games. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Reinhart Field.
