Basketball Loses Close Conference Game To Mount Saint Vincent, 72-63

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 5, 2011) – Despite fighting back from a 13-point first-half deficit to take the lead in the second half, the Maritime men's basketball team lost to Skyline Conference foe Mount Saint Vincent, 72-63, Saturday afternoon at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. The defeat drops the Privateer record to 8-12 overall (6-9 Skyline), while the Dolphins improve to 14-7 (9-7 Skyline).

Senior Quamel Lyerly (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence) recorded a double-double with a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds. The forward also recorded seven steals in the losing effort. Classmate Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) contributed 13 points, as did junior Sam Porte (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science & Engineering), who came up just one board short of a double-double.

Mount Saint Vincent grabbed a healthy 12-point lead just 5:24 into the game, 14-2. The Privateers used their second timeout of the half to regain their composure. They cut the deficit down to seven points twice, but the Dolphins went on to grab their largest lead of the day, 13 points (23-10), at 6:47 of the opening half. Maritime completely dominated rebounds for the last five minutes of the first half and fought back to within three points, 31-28, after a good free throw by Porte with no time on the clock to send the teams into the locker room.

In the second half, after back-and-forth play, the Privateers finally tied the score at 48-48 on a three-point play by Porte at 10:22. Maritime took its first lead of the day, 50-49, on its next possession when Hurley nailed a jumper at 9:57. After another jumper by Hurley at 7:40 put the Privateers ahead 55-53, the Dolphins exploded for a 16-4 run over the next seven minutes to build up a double-digit lead, 69-59, with 49 seconds remaining.

Mount Saint Vincent was led by Maxxwell Faircloth, who recorded a double-double with 19 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. All four other starters scored in double-figures for the Dolphins.

Up next, the Privateers will play host to Sage on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
