OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Feb. 16, 2011) – The Maritime men's basketball team lost on the road, 79-47, Wednesday night at Skyline Conference-foe Old Westbury. With the loss, the Privateers fall to 8-16 overall (6-13 Skyline), while the Panthers improve to 11-13 (10-9 Skyline).
Maritime was led by senior Paul Suarino (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), who scored a team-best 13 points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting from the field, all from long distance, and 1-for-2 from the charity stripe. Junior Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) also scored in double-figures for the Privateers, chipping in with 11 points. Senior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) led the squad with seven rebounds.
Old Westbury quickly turned a three-point halftime lead into a 21-point lead by starting the second half on a 23-5 run over the first 6:39. The Privateers turned the ball over six times during that stretch and a total of 19 times on the night, which led to 22 of the Panthers' points.
Senior Lester Prosper led the home team with a game-high 28 points and 18 rebounds. Prosper was also two blocks shy of a triple-double, as he swatted away eight Maritime shots. Two other players recorded double-digits for the Panthers: Jamal Little had 16, while Scott Arias scored 13.
The Privateers return to action for the final game of the 2010-11 season this Saturday night, Feb. 19, when they play host to Skyline opponent Yeshiva University. The game will mark the final home contest for Maritime's five graduating seniors and they will be honored prior to the game with a Senior Night Ceremony. Game time is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
