THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 12, 2011) – The Maritime men's basketball team stormed back from a 12-point second half deficit to take a one-point lead with 7:34 to play, but visiting Farmingdale State played strong down the stretch to take home a 70-62 conference victory Saturday afternoon at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. The loss drops the Privateers to 8-15 (6-12 Skyline), while the Rams improve to 14-9 (13-5 Skyline).
Maritime had four players score in double-figures as seniors Quamel Lyerly (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence) and Paul Suarino (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) each led all players with 14 points. Junior Sam Porte (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science & Engineering) recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Classmate Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) finished with 10 points.
The Privateers jumped out to an early lead, but play was back-and-forth in the first half, as the score was tied four times in the first 13 minutes. The Privateers went on a 5-0 run and Suarino capped it off with a long jumper to take a 26-21 lead, the largest lead for either team in the opening period. Farmingdale came back and took a two-point, 31-29 lead into the locker rooms for the half. Maritime shot 11-for-24 (45.8-percent) from the field in the first half.
In the second half, the Rams came out strong, and built their lead to double-digits in the first four and a half minutes. At 12:13, a layup by senior John Dabney gave FSC a 12-point lead, 48-36, their largest lead of the game. The Privateers went on a 15-2 run to take a 51-50 lead after a three-pointer by Porte at 7:34, but the Farmingdale spun off its own 10-0 run to go up 60-51. Maritime was unable to come back from that deficit.
The Rams were led by senior Jermaine Abraham, who also registered a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Classmate Keith Nandin and junior Josh Smith each contributed 11 points in the winning effort.
Maritime returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 16, when the squad travels to Old Westbury, N.Y., to take on the Panthers. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at OW's Panther Pavilion.
