Privateers Overpowered By NYU At Home, 73-42, Tuesday Night

        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Dec. 6, 2011) – The Maritime men's basketball team lost to visiting NYU Tuesday night by the score of 73-42 in a non-conference showdown between the inner-city foes at the Riesenberg Gym. The defeat drops Maritime's record to 1-7 overall on the season, while the Violets won their fifth-straight to start the season with a 5-0 mark.
 
        Two players scored in double-figures for Maritime, led by grad student Sam Porte (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science & Engineering) (Harlem, N.Y./Math, Sci. & Engin.) who tallied 12 points on the night. Junior Hugh Byrd (Pequannock, N.J./DePaul Catholic) (Newfoundland, N.J./DePaul Catholic) chipped in a career-high 10 points. Porte also grabbed down a team-high five rebounds.
 
        Points off of turnovers were the key to victory for NYU, as the Violets recorded 29 points after forcing 23 Privateer turnovers – 11 of the points came in the fast-break form. The University Athletic Association-opponent also won the battle in the paint, outscoring Maritime, 36-18, from within the key.
 
        For NYU, junior Carl Yaffe (Bethesda, Md.) led all players in points with 15 and rebounds with seven and shot 60.0-percent from the field (6-for-10). Senior Andy Stein (Bethlehem, Pa.) also recorded 15 points in the winning effort, while sophomore Ryan Tana (Belmont, Calif.) added 11.
 
        The Privateers are right back at it on Thursday night, Dec. 8, when they play host to local Skyline Conference-rival Mount Saint Vincent. Game time against the Dolphins is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
