Men’s Soccer Advances To Skyline Finals With 1-0 Victory Over Mount Saint Mary

        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 2, 2011) – The Maritime men's soccer team got a 15th minute goal by senior Tom Federico (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and held on for the 1-0 victory over Mount Saint Mary in the Skyline Conference semifinals Wednesday night at Reinhart Field. The win advances the Privateers to the Skyline Championship game for the second straight season and improves their record to 12-5-3 overall, while the Blue Knights end their season at 8-10-1.
 
        A great effort by three Maritime seniors led to Federico's goal. The play started on a strong free kick from midfield by Arthur Melody (East Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) (East Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) that was redirected in front by Jack Blunden (Arlington, Va./Washington) (Arlington, Va./Washington) and Federico was there to boot the ball home. Melody and Blunden were both credited with assists on the goal.
 
        The Privateers outshot Mount 13-9 on the night, but the chances were pretty even in the second half. Junior Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, N.Y./Commack) made a great save in the 67th minute to keep the game 1-0. Blue Knights' junior Sean Barton took a point-blank shot from the top of the box that Vanadia jumped in front of. Mount Saint Mary did maintain possession from the 72nd minute to the 84th minute, but was unable to get a shot on goal, as two shots sailed wide.
 
        In goal, Vanadia finished the night with three saves and picked up his fifth win of the season, while Mount's sophomore Matt Darling made seven saves in the losing effort.
 
        The Privateers will now travel to face the #1 seed in the Skyline Tournament, St. Joseph's, this Saturday, Nov. 5, in the championship game. The winner of that game will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Centereach Field in Centereach, N.Y., in Suffolk County.
