Basketball Falls To Host, Scranton, 92-62, On First Day Of Radisson Invitational

        SCRANTON, Pa. (Nov. 18, 2011) – The Maritime men's basketball team lost on the road to the University of Scranton Friday night, 92-62. The game was the second of the Radisson Invitational, hosted by Scranton. In defeat, the Privateers fall to 0-2 on the young season, while the Royals start the year off with a 1-0 record and will play in the championship game tomorrow afternoon against New Paltz.
 
        Senior Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) led all players in the game with 19 points, while classmate Sam Porte (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science & Engineering) (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science & Engineering) tallied 16 points and freshman T-Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sun Land Academy) scored 13 to round out Maritime's double-digit scorers. Porte and sophomore Jack Cole (Bethany Beach, Del./Indian River) (Bethany Beach, Del./Indian River) each had a team-high six rebounds, apiece.
 
        Play was pretty even throughout the opening seven minutes of the game, as the score was tied 10-10 at 13:23 of the first. From there, Scranton went on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 20-10 lead, before the Privateers fought back within four points on two baskets by Porte and one by freshman Louie Lewis (Bronx, N.Y./Eagle Academy) (Bronx, N.Y./Eagle Academy) to make the score, 20-16, at 9:00.
 
        The Royals again pushed the lead to double digits and took their largest lead of the first half, 11 points (37-26), with 32 seconds remaining on a three pointer by junior Tim Lavelle. McSloy responded with a trey of his own with 10 seconds to go and Maritime went into the locker rooms down eight, 37-29.
 
        Gibson scored 10 points in the first half to lead the Privateers, while McSloy put up nine and Porte added eight. The Royals did not shoot that much better than Maritime, 45.2-percent to 43.4-percent, but they were 8-for-15 from beyond the three-point arc (53.5-percent), while also out-rebounding the Privateers, 23-14, in the opening 20 minutes.
 
        In the second half, Scranton continued to ride the “three” early on, making two of its next three shots from long range, including one by junior Edmond O'Connell at 14:27 that gave the Royals its largest lead of the night thus far, 15 points (53-38). Scranton cruised from there, building its lead up to 20 (67-47) on two free throws by freshman Ross Danzig at 8:32. The lead reached 30, 84-54, at 3:31 when senior Nick Jaskula made both of his free throws and the Royals went on to take the victory.
 
        After shooting 60.6-percent from the field in the second half (20-for-33), Scranton ended the night with a 53.1-percent shooting percentage to the Privateers' 43.3-percent. The Royals were also on fire from downtown, connecting on 57.1-percent of their three-pointers (12-for-21).
Scranton was led by junior Travis Farrell, who scored a team-high 18 points. Four other players scored in double figures for the Royals: senior Luke Hawk (15), Lavelle (14), Danzig (13) and senior Dan Hilferty (12). Danzig and senior Matt Swaback led all players with seven rebounds, while Hilfery dished out a game-high six assists.
 
        The Privateers will now play in the consolation game of the Radisson Inviational on Saturday against Centenary College. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Scranton's Long Center.
