PURCHASE, N.Y. (Oct. 27, 2011) – The Maritime men's soccer team defeated Skyline Conference foe Purchase, 1-0, on the road Thursday night in the squad's regular-season finale to claim the #2 seed in the upcoming Skyline Tournament. With the win, the Privateers improve to 11-5-3 (6-2-1 Skyline), while the Panthers fall to 6-8-2 (3-5-1 Skyline) and miss out on a spot in the tournament.
 
Senior Jack Blunden (Arlington, Va./Washington) (Arlington, Va./Washington) scored the only goal of the game and it came very late, in the 84th minute. He corralled the ball down low and blasted a shot past the Purchase keeper. Maritime outshot the Panthers, 18-12, on the night. The game was very physical, as it featured three yellow cards: two for Purchase and one for the Privateers.
 
In goal, junior Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, N.Y./Commack) picked up his fourth win of the season after stopping four shots to earn the shutout. For the Panthers, senior David Kurzweil made six saves but gave up the late goal to suffer the loss.
 
With the #2 seed, the Privateers earn a first round bye in the Skyline Tournament and will await the winner of the NYU-Poly vs. Mount Saint Mary game, which will be played this Saturday night in Brooklyn. Maritime will host the semifinal match next Wednesday, Nov. 2 at Reinhart Field. The game time will be announced in the coming days.
