Men’s Soccer Game Day: Privateers Look To Lock Up #2 Seed In Skyline Tournament Thursday Night At Purchase

10/27/2011 12:55:00 PM

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 27, 2011) – The Maritime men's soccer team will travel up to Purchase to take on the Panthers in the final contest of the regular season tonight at 7 p.m. The outcome of the game will have a great effect on both squads as the Privateers can lock up the #2 seed and a first round bye in the Skyline Tournament with a win, while Purchase is playing to extend its season and make the tournament as the #6.

If the Privateers fail to grab the three points tonight, they will be the #4 seed and host the #5 seed Old Westbury Panthers in the first round of the Skyline Tournament Saturday night. If Maritime wins, they hop over Sage and NYU-Poly to grab the second seed that includes a first round bye and a home game in the semifinals next Wednesday, Nov. 2.

Tonight's game is a makeup of the previously postponed meeting that was supposed to take place on Oct. 14, but was called off due to lightning and foul weather. The weather in Purchase tonight calls for a cozy 43 degrees with rain at kickoff.

A Look At Today's Matchup

Since Purchase joined the Skyline Conference in 2007, Maritime has won each of the four meetings. In the 2010 season, the Privateers blanked the Panthers, 7-0, at Reinhart Field.

Senior James Cronin (Smithtown, N.Y./Kings Park) led the Privateers with a pair of goals on the night, as he ended the scoring in the contest. Then-junior Jason Tursi (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) opened the scoring with a goal in the 21st minute. In goal, senior Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) picked up the victory after stopping one shot in the first half of play. He was replaced at halftime by then-sophomore Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, N.Y./Commack), who along with then-freshman John Dunne (Southold, N.Y./Southold) (Southold, N.Y./Southold) helped to preserve the shutout in the second half.
