Men’s Soccer Picks Up Non-Conference Win Over Brooklyn, 2-1

        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2011) – The Maritime men's soccer team defeated Brooklyn College, 2-1, Monday night at Reinhart Field. The win improves the Privateers to 10-4-2 overall on the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-10-2.
 

        Freshman Oliver Garcia Ortiz (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) got the scoring started in the 17th minute when he fired two shots in a row, the first was blocked by a Brooklyn defender and the second found the back of the net. Maritime outshot the Bulldogs 12-3 in the first half and led 1-0 going into halftime.
 

        Just 18 seconds into the second half, junior Chris Anderson (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) scored his first goal of the season off an assist by freshman Collin Taylor (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) and the Privateers took a 2-0 lead. Brooklyn finally broke through in the 76th minute, when junior Miguel Veliz-Fitz shot the ball from the near side of the six-yard box, slowly, and it trickled into the net off the far post past the diving Maritime keeper, junior Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, N.Y./Commack). The Privateers held the Bulldogs from getting the equalizer in the final 12 minutes of play to preserve the victory.
 

        Vanadia earned his third victory of the season after making one save in the second half. He gave way to freshman Patrick Kelleher (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) for the final 12:05, who made the first save of his collegiate career. For Brooklyn, sophomore Stamatis Boundouris made seven saves in the losing effort.
 

        Maritime returns to action on Thursday night, Oct. 20, when they play host to Skyline opponent Mount Saint Vincent. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
