Privateers Defeat Sage, 3-1, To Move Into Third Place In Skyline

        THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 12, 2011) – The Maritime men's soccer team moved up three spots from sixth place to third in the Skyline Conference standings after a 3-1 home victory over Sage Wednesday night at Reinhart Field. The win improves the Privateers to 9-4-2 overall (4-2 Skyline), while the Gators fall to 8-6-1 (4-3 Skyline) in defeat.
 
        Sage scored the first goal of the game in the 13th minute, when sophomore Evan Southworth headed the ball into the back of the net off a cross by classmate Wesley Finch. The Privateers answered back with a header goal of their own in the 35th minute, when senior Jason Tursi (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) put one past the Gators' keeper to even the score at 1-1. Classmate Tom Federico (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (Islip, N.Y./Islip) picked up the assist on the tally.
 
        In the second half, with exactly 20 minutes remaining in the game, junior Ryan Nugent (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) scored off what would stand as the game-winning goal with the assist again going to Federico. Maritime added an insurance goal in the 79th minute, when Tursi scored his second of the game, this one by way of a penalty kick.
 
        In goal, sophomore John Dunne (Southold, N.Y./Southold) (Southold, N.Y./Southold) earned his seventh win of the season by stopping two shots in the contest. His counterpart for Sage, sophomore Cory Gransbury, suffered the loss despite making eight saves.
 
        The Privateers return to action on Friday, Oct. 14, when they travel up to nearby SUNY Purchase College. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Panthers Field.
