Men’s Basketball Falls To Mount Saint Mary, 77-49, On The Road

            NEWBURGH, N.Y. (Jan. 4, 2010) – The Maritime men's basketball team lost to Mount Saint Mary, 77-48, on the road Tuesday night at the Blue Knights' Kaplan Center. The loss moves the Privateers' record to an even 5-5 on the season (3-2 Skyline), while The Mount improves to 7-4 (5-1 Skyline).

            Senior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) recorded a double-double with a team-high 15 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Sam Porte (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science & Engineering) (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science & Engineering) registered nine points and nine boards.

Maritime struggled early out of the gate, falling behind 9-0 to start, and 13-2 within the first five minutes of the game. The Blue Knights took a 36-22 lead into halftime. Hurley led all players with nine points in the first half. Porte and junior Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) had six and five points, respectively. The Privateers shot just 27.8-percent in the opening half.

The first basket of the second half didn't come until 2:11 in, when Porte converted a three-point play. A trey from Paul Suarino (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) brought the Privateers within nine points, 38-31, with 14:29 remaining. That was the closest Maritime would come, however, as the Blue Knights took off on a 13-0 run and took a 51-31 lead with 11:59 to play. Both teams brought in their benches with 3:45 remaining and The Mount held on for the win.

Mount Saint Mary was led by freshman Joe Stabach, who scored 17 points. Junior Kevin Milella recorded a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Senior Tim Morris also scored in double-figures with 13 points.

Maritime returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 6, when the squad travels up to Troy, N.Y. to take on Skyline opponent Sage. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Gators' Kahl Campus Center Gymnasium.
