THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Jan. 23, 2011) – The Maritime men's basketball team defeated conference opponent Yeshiva, 89-77, on the road Saturday night at the Maccabees' Max Stern Athletic Center. The third consecutive win improves the Privateers' overall record to 8-9 on the season (6-6 Skyline), while the Macs fall to 2-13 (2-9 Skyline).
Maritime picked up a season high 23 assists in the contest, as senior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) led the way with nine helpers. Hurley also contributed with 23 points, six rebounds and five steals. Senior Quamel Lyerly (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence) (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence) scored a team-high 26 points, while classmate Paul Suarino (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) scored a season-high 17 points after shooting 6-for-9 from the field, including 5-for-7 from 3-point range, and also registered four assists.
Junior Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) recorded 14 points to round out the Privateers' double-digit scorers and also chipped in with seven assists. Senior Andrew Geisel (Media, Pa./Penncrest) (Media, Pa./Penncrest) scored eight points, while junior Sam Porte (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science & Engineering) (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science & Engineering) matched the team-high with six rebounds.
The Macs were led by sophomore Dovie Hoffman, who scored a team-high 20 points and tied for the game-high eight rebounds with classmate Gil Bash. Bash and junior Omer Haim each scored 15 points in the losing effort.
The Privateers now have a full week off and will return to the court next Saturday, Jan. 29, when they travel to Purchase to take on the Panthers. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Purchase's Panther Pavilion.
