QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 7, 2010) – The Maritime men's soccer team lost its Labor Day matchup against CUNYAC-opponent John Jay, 3-2, in overtime Monday afternoon at the Metropolitan Oval in Queens. The loss drops the Privateers' record to 0-2 to open the season, while the Bloodhounds improve to 2-1 with the win.

Maritime was unable to control John Jay's freshman Edward Gonzalez, as the forward recorded all three of the Bloodhound goals, including the golden-goal winner in the 94th minute in overtime.

Gonzalez scored the first goal of the game just 6:11 into play. The Privateers responded with two quick goals by freshman James Cole (Northville, N.Y./Northville) (Northville, N.Y./Northville) that were just over a minute apart in the 21st and 22nd minutes. Gonzalez again found the back of the net just eight minutes later in the 30th to tie the game at 2-2.

Play remained close for the rest of regulation – John Jay narrowly outshot Maritime, 15-13, throughout the entire match – and the initial 90 minutes ended. In the first four minutes of overtime, Gonzalez tallied the game-winner, completing his hat trick on the first shot of the period, to raise the Bloodhounds to the victory.

The Privateers return to action tomorrow, Sept. 8, when they travel to take on the rivals from across the Long Island Sound, The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point. Kickoff against the Mariners is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. at USMMA's Captain Tomb Field.
