Men’s Soccer Outlasts Medgar Evers, 4-2

             THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2010) – Despite periodic downpours throughout the night, the Maritime men's soccer team, led by junior Jason Tursi (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) who had three assists in the game, defeated the visiting Medgar Evers Cougars, 4-2, Monday night at Reinhart Field. With the win, the Privateers improve to 6-4 overall on the season, while Medgar Evers falls to 4-5-1.

             The first goal of the game was scored by junior Tom Federico (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (Islip, N.Y. / Islip), his fourth of the year. The ball found a wide-open Federico on the left side of the net off of a Tursi corner kick from the opposite side. He rifled the ball into the net in the fifth minute to give Maritime an early 1-0 lead. The Privateers struck again 20 minutes later after another Tursi. This one found the head of junior Kevin Connolly (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) (Warwick, N.Y. / Warwick Valley) who directed it passed the keeper into the net.

             The Cougars answered back with a goal in the 32nd minute when senior Sharard Sullivan scored off of a corner kick. However, Maritime would score again just under six minutes later, when freshman Yunus Yildiz (Adapazari, Turkey/Yenikent Anudolu Lisesi) (Adapazari, Turkey/Yenikent Anudolu Lisesi) sent in a beautiful high cross that found the head of classmate Nicholas LaRocca (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley), who put the ball in the back of the net. The teams went into the short halftime break with the Privateers ahead, 3-1.

             In the second half, Medgar Evers cut the lead back to one goal in the 79th minute when sophomore Kyheo Farquharson scored when a rebound fell right to him and he tapped the ball into the open left side of the net. The game remained close, but Maritime scored its insurance goal with exactly one minute left in the game when Tursi picked up his third assist of the night after running down a ball that was going out on the far right side of the field and feeding sophomore Haluk Erdogen (Izmir,Turkey/Aliaga Alp Oguz Anadolu Lisesi) towards the center. Erdogen ripped a shot past the Cougars keeper for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

             In net for Maritime, sophomore Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, N.Y./Commack) made two saves in the winning effort, while Medgar Evers keeper Christopher Welsh also made two saves.

             The Privateers return to action this Wednesday, Sept. 29, when they travel to Skyline Conference Opponent St. Joseph's-L.I. Kickoff against the Golden Eagles is set for 7 p.m. at Diamond in the Pines in Coram, Long Island, N.Y.
